pTron Basspods 381 True Wireless Earbuds with mic: Review

pTron is a sub-brand of Indian tech company Palred Technologies Ltd. It has recently launched it’s latest smart ear-buds named pTron BassPods 381 in-Ear True Wireless Stereo (TWS).

Priced at Rs 1,399, it is cheaper than premium TWS earbuds and comes with a 10 m wireless Bluetooth range.

But is it worth the price? Let’s find out.

Build and Design

pTron Bass Pods 381 in-Ear are quite different from the other brand earbuds. It built with a rectangular casing with rounded edges. In most cases the size of the case are rounded like earth.

The casing, which is also a charging base, is insert with a 300 mAh battery.

The plastic built casing has a premium look and a matt rubberized finish. Unfortunately, this makes it a fingerprint magnet.

However, there is a battery indicator at the base, which is armed with four white LEDs. They light up in sequence to indicate the level of the battery charge at 0%, 25%, 75% and 100% respectively.

While my review pair was Blue, these earbuds come in Black and Blue range of colours.

These TWS earbuds feature an HD mic in each earbud which permit stereo quality calls for clean unadulterated conversation.

The buds rest inside the casing, but there is no magnet inside for them to cling onto. Instead, you just need to slide the buds inside the slots provided.

There is no R/L indicator engraved or printed on the right and left buds. It is difficult to know which will go in which ear for a proper fit unless you get used to it.

Moreover, it designed ergonomically with gel-flexible silicone ear-caps to ensure your in-ear headphones fit comfortably in your ears. So light you can barely notice, comfortable after hours of wear thanks to its ergonomic design.

The pair comes with extra silicon tips.

In my opinion, always try on the extra silicon tips provided to experience the sound of your liking and fit.

The buds are quite lightweight and ergonomically designed so they fit perfectly in the ear, creating passive noise cancellation to avoid ambient sounds.

Each bud has an MFB (multi-function button) to power on/off, control playback, call receive/reject and activate voice assistants.

Following are the list of multi-function button, which are includes in this model:

  • Power on: Take out both the earbuds from the charging case
  • Power off: Place both the earbuds into the charging case
  • Next song: Press MFB twice on either earbuds.
  • Previous song: Press MFB thrice on either earbuds.
  • Play/Pause: Press MFB once on either earbuds.
  • Call receive/ Hang up: Press MFB once on either earbuds.
  • Reject calls: Press MFB for 2 seconds on either earbuds.
  • Voice assistance: Press MFB for 2 seconds on either earbuds.

Just press the button on either earbud to wake up the voice assistant on your phone – make calls, look things up online, provide directions, open apps, set appointments on our calendars, and initiate or complete many other tasks.

I would have liked to have volume control function on the buds as well; instead, you have to control the volume through your phone.

As the name suggests, the buds deliver bass-heavy output; those who like deep bass should have to try the earbuds.

With Pure Deep Bass Hi-Fi Stereo Sound, 8mm dynamic driver gives off deep bass and the outstanding performance in middle and treble delivers an extraordinarily natural musical and communication experience. The 3 sizes of silicone ear-caps isolate the ambient sounds to create a submissive joy.

The instruments and vocals were well separated, creating a 3D virtual depth in the music.

Range and Connectivity

pTron Basspods 381 wireless earphones come with the latest and professional Bluetooth 5.1 chipset. It delivers a faster and more stable wireless connection to your device for 10-meters wireless range. There is negligible latency or delay in the audio-video synchronisation while watching videos. Zero wire to tangle your motions enjoy music and hands-free stereo calls on the go.

Both the buds sync well with each other to give a great stereo experience.

I found little latency in sound sync while playing game like Asphalt 9: Legends — Epic Car Racing.

Call quality

The call quality is fair; I could hear the person calling clearly, but my voice to the receiver was a little suppressed.

Pods 381 battery has good standby time. After charging the case and the buds, I had used them after a week and still it had 70-80 per cent charge left in the buds.

The casing takes approximately 1.5 hours to charge its 300 mAh inbuilt battery from 0 to 100 per cent.

Single charging can maintain earbuds working for 5 hours. The compact pocket-friendly charging case provides 2-3 times charging to the earbuds. Standby time is about 100 hours. You could charge your earbuds whenever and wherever you want.

I wish they had included a fast charging feature for quick use on the go.

You can charge buds and the case using the micro-USB port or the 5W Qi wireless charging pad supplied in the box.

The Qi wireless charger is the real USP here.

If you are looking for a TWS with a Qi wireless charger, high bass and good battery life without making a dent your pocket, then you can certainly try the pTron BassPods 381.
