Starlink is the satellite internet division own by the billionaire Elon Musk’s rocket company SpaceX. It will apply for a commercial license early upcoming year to come up with broadband and services in India. “We expect to have applied for a commercial license on or before January 31, 2022 ” said by Sanjay Bhargava. Moreover, if the company can launch its services by April, it aims to have 200,000 Starlink devices in India by December 2022, Bhargava said in a presentation posted. The company had earlier said that it come up with 80 percent of these devices to be in rural areas.
Starlink is one of a growing number of companies launching small satellites as part of a low-earth orbit network to furnish low-latency broadband Internet services worldwide. Its competitors include Amazon.com’s Quiper and OneWeb, which are co-owned by the British government and India’s Bharti Enterprise.
While Starlink has received over 5,000 pre-orders for its devices in India, it has not launched any service.
However, government advised people not to subscribe to Starlink as it does not have license to operate in India. He also warned the company to stay away from booking and providing services.
After that the company has stopped accepting pre-orders for its devices, citing “pending regulatory approvals”, according to its website.
Last month, the company registered a local entity called Starlink Satellite Communications Pvt Ltd. Which paved the way for it to start business in the country.
